Tomato Cherokee Purple

£2.20

Tomato ‘Cherokee Purple’ is a much-loved American heritage variety, producing large, beautifully coloured beefsteak tomatoes with dusky purple-red skin and deep crimson flesh. The fruits are wonderfully juicy with a rich, complex flavour and an excellent balance of sweetness and acidity.

An open-pollinated heirloom variety, ‘Cherokee Purple’ is an indeterminate (cordon) tomato producing substantial fruits that are particularly good for slicing. Plants are vigorous and can be grown in a greenhouse or outdoors in a warm, sheltered position. Support the plants as they grow and remove the side shoots regularly.

Sow indoors from February to April. Sow thinly in seed compost and keep warm until germination. Pot seedlings on when large enough to handle and plant into their final position once the risk of frost has passed.

Annual.

Height: approximately 1.5–2m.

Position: Full sun.

Harvest: July to October.

Type: Cordon / indeterminate beefsteak tomato.

Excellent for: Slicing, salads, sandwiches and fresh eating.
