Sweet Pea Growing Guide
Sowing time: Sow sweet peas in autumn and overwinter them in a cold greenhouse, or sow them in late winter/early spring (February to March). Use root trainers or deep pots to encourage strong root development.
Planting out: Plant outdoors from the end of March onwards, once plants are well established.
Flowering period: May to August.
Height: Up to 2 metres. Provide a sturdy support, such as a trellis, netting, or canes, for them to climb.
Seed saving: Allow seed pods to mature on the plant. Harvest seeds once the pods are dry and brown, then store them in a cool, dry place.
Pests and problems: Protect young plants from slugs and snails. Avoid overwatering, but water thoroughly during hot, dry weather to encourage continuous flowering.
